Head-to-Head
How Better Bookshelf compares
Every app here can build a list of your books. Better Bookshelf is the one that photographs a whole shelf, records where each book sits, and later shows you that book highlighted in the photo when you search for it. Cataloging, reading tracking, imports, and highlights come along; the shelf is the difference.
Compared: Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Libib, BookBuddy, and CLZ Books, plus the newer spine-scanning apps. Last updated: September 2026.

The difference
From a photo of your shelf to the book in your hand
Cataloging apps answer "do I own it?". Better Bookshelf also answers "where is it?", and it keeps that answer current as your shelves change.
Start with the shelf you already have
Photograph a bookcase with the books in place. AI reads the spines, suggests a match for each one, and marks where it sits. You add the matches together and fix the uncertain ones.
Find the book, not just the title
Search a title or author, or tap Find on shelf from any book in your library. The app opens your saved shelf photo with that spine highlighted, shows a close-up, and tells you which books sit beside it.
Your existing library gets locations too
Shelf matching checks the books already in your catalog first, so a book you rated years ago simply gains a spot on a shelf. Your ratings, notes, and reading history stay attached.
Shelves change. So can the photo
Name each shelf. When you rearrange, take a new photo and the app shows which books it found again and which locations it will clear before you save.
Keep reading your way
Track unread, reading, and read books. Keep a reading list, ratings, and reviews. Import Kindle and Audible CSVs, sync Readwise highlights, export everything, and back up to your own Google Drive.
Rival by Rival
Where each app wins, and where we do
Each of these apps is good at something. Here is where Better Bookshelf comes out ahead, and where the other app is the better pick.
vs. Goodreads
A social network that forgot to be a library tool.
- Whole-shelf scanning: Goodreads recognizes one cover at a time; Better Bookshelf identifies a full bookcase from one photo and records where each book sits
- Find on shelf: Goodreads has no concept of a physical location; Better Bookshelf highlights the book in your saved shelf photo
- No Amazon account, no ads, no social layer; your library lives on your phone and your own Google Drive
- Imports your Goodreads CSV export directly, so switching takes minutes
- Where Goodreads wins: Friend activity, reviews from millions of readers, and the Want to Read shelf as a social object.
vs. The StoryGraph
A great reading tracker with no scanner and no physical-library management.
- StoryGraph tracks what you read; Better Bookshelf also catalogs what you own, where it is on the shelf, and who borrowed it
- Barcode scanning and whole-shelf AI scanning built in; StoryGraph has no scanner at all
- Physical, Kindle, and Audible copies merge into one entry with format badges
- Readwise highlights sit on each book's page inside the catalog
- Where The StoryGraph wins: Mood and pacing recommendations, reading statistics, and a genuinely good Goodreads import for reading history.
vs. Libib
Capable multi-media cataloging, but web-dependent and account-required.
- Libib scans one barcode at a time; Better Bookshelf photographs the whole shelf and marks each book's position
- Your library works offline in a local database; Libib needs its web service
- No sign-up required; Libib requires an account and stores your data in its cloud
- Lending tracker is included; Libib's is Pro-only
- Where Libib wins: Movies, music, and games alongside books, and a web interface suited to small organizational lending libraries.
vs. BookBuddy
A solid iOS cataloger with no shelf locations and no Android version.
- Available on Android as well as iPhone; BookBuddy is Apple-only
- Whole-shelf AI scanning and saved shelf locations, which BookBuddy does not offer
- Kindle and Audible libraries merge into the same catalog with format badges; BookBuddy's audiobook support is weak
- One-time Unlimited purchase; BookBuddy stacks a purchase with an optional subscription
- Where BookBuddy wins: iCloud sync between Apple devices, and a long track record on iOS.
vs. CLZ Books
Excellent barcode scanner and catalog data, at $24.95 every year.
- CLZ adds books by barcode or title search; Better Bookshelf adds a whole shelf from one photo and remembers where every book is
- One-time purchase with six AI scans included versus $24.95 per year, forever
- Physical, Kindle, and Audible editions unified in one entry; CLZ treats them as separate items
- Readwise highlights inside the catalog; CLZ has nothing comparable
- Where CLZ Books wins: The most reliable barcode scanner in the category, collector-grade edition data, and CLZ's cloud sync across devices.
The new spine scanners
What about the other apps that scan a shelf photo?
AI spine recognition arrived in several apps during 2025 and 2026, so "scan a whole shelf" is no longer unique on its own. What separates them is what they keep. These apps identify the books and stop; Better Bookshelf keeps the photo and every book's position, links matches to your existing library, and lets you search and find the book later.
Librisync
Identifies spines from a shelf photo and adds the books to a library. Its own docs state photos are processed for recognition and then discarded; only book metadata is stored, so there is no location to search later.
Shelf Scan
A free iOS app that identifies books from a shelf photo and shows ratings, aimed at deciding what to read or buy. It keeps a scan history but does not track where a book sits or highlight it on request.
Spines
Reads spines in thrift stores and bookshops to surface highly rated finds. It is a scouting tool, not a home-library catalog, and does not save shelf positions.
What Better Bookshelf doesn't do
Some of these are deliberate, some are trade-offs. Either way, if one of them is the thing you need most, another app on this page is the better choice.
Comparison questions, answered
Which book cataloging app can tell me where a book is on my shelf?
Better Bookshelf is the app in this comparison that records a physical location for each book. When you scan a shelf photo, every identified book's position is saved with the photo. Later you search by title or author, or tap Find on shelf from the book's page, and the app opens that photo with the spine highlighted, a close-up, and directions relative to the books beside it. Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Libib, BookBuddy, and CLZ Books catalog books but have no concept of where a copy sits.
Do other apps scan a whole bookshelf at once?
Several newer apps identify books from a shelf photo, including Librisync, Shelf Scan, and Spines. The difference is what happens after identification. Those apps keep the book list and discard the photo or its positions; Better Bookshelf keeps both, links matches to books already in your library, and lets you update a shelf with a new photo when books move. Among the established cataloging apps compared here, none identify a full shelf from one photo.
Is Better Bookshelf cheaper than CLZ Books or BookBuddy?
Better Bookshelf is free for 50 books, then a one-time US$29.99 Unlimited upgrade that includes 6 whole-shelf AI scans, with optional 6-scan packs at US$10. CLZ Books costs $24.95 every year, so Better Bookshelf costs less from the second year on. BookBuddy is $6.99 to $9.99 plus an optional subscription and has no shelf scanning to compare.

The Pitch
"Take one photo of your bookshelf. Better Bookshelf identifies the books, adds them to your library, and remembers where each one sits. Months later, search for a title and it shows you the shelf photo with that spine highlighted and the books beside it. Your Kindle and Audible copies and your highlights live on the same page. No sign-up, no subscription, no ads, and your library stays on your phone and your own Google Drive."
